What model are NYC taxis?
The Model of NYC Taxis
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has been transitioning its fleet of yellow taxis to accessible Toyota Sienna models since 2019. The TLC's goal is to have a fully accessible taxi fleet by 2023.
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan that has been converted for TLC yellow taxi use. The conversions include a lowered floor, a wheelchair lift, and other features that make the taxi accessible to passengers with disabilities.
There are three different types of accessible Toyota Sienna models that are used as yellow taxis in New York City:
- BraunAbility MV-1: This conversion features a rear-entry wheelchair lift and a spacious interior with room for up to four passengers and a wheelchair.
- Vantage Mobility MV-1: This conversion also features a rear-entry wheelchair lift and a spacious interior with room for up to four passengers and a wheelchair.
- FR Conversions Accessible NYC Taxi (AMT) Sienna: This conversion features a side-entry wheelchair lift and a spacious interior with room for up to four passengers and a wheelchair.
The standard AMT Sienna is the most common type of accessible Toyota Sienna used as a yellow taxi in New York City. It is a wheelchair-accessible vehicle that features a BraunAbility MV-1 conversion with a rear-entry wheelchair lift.
In addition to the three types of accessible Toyota Sienna models, the TLC also allows a limited number of other wheelchair-accessible vehicles to be used as yellow taxis. These vehicles must meet the TLC's accessibility standards and must be inspected and approved by the TLC.
The TLC's transition to an accessible taxi fleet is part of its commitment to providing equal access to transportation for all New Yorkers. The TLC believes that everyone should have the opportunity to hail a yellow taxi and get where they need to go, regardless of their ability.
