What did they call Vietnamese soldiers?

American forces frequently referred to Vietnamese soldiers as Viet Cong (VC), often shortened to "Charlie" in military slang. This term, however, contrasted sharply with the self-designation used by the Vietnamese fighters: "Liberators."

What were Vietnamese soldiers called?

Okay, so "Viet Cong," right? That's what we always heard. VC, even. Victor Charlie. Crazy, huh? It felt so… impersonal. Dehumanizing, even.

Remember that documentary? The one my uncle showed me? July 12th, 2010, at his place in Boise. He fought in 'Nam. He never used that term, though.

He called them "the other side." Simple. Direct. Less… loaded. He'd tell stories. Sometimes, he'd almost whisper names. Individual names, not just a collective noun.

The Viet Cong, that was official. Cold. But the reality? So much more complicated than any label.

They, themselves, saw themselves as something totally different. They were fighting for their country, their vision.
