How do you talk about cultural awareness?

So, how do you even talk about cultural awareness? It's tricky, right? It's not like there's a textbook on this. I mean, you want to be respectful, obviously. I remember once, I was chatting with a coworker – lovely guy from Nigeria – and I tried to ask about his childhood. Seemed harmless enough, right? But his face kinda closed up, and he mumbled something about it being a long story. Oof. I felt like a total doofus. I learned then that just because I'm curious doesn't mean someone else has to be comfortable sharing.

Talking about different cultures should be a conversation, not an interrogation. Like, a real back-and-forth. You ask about their stuff, you tell them about yours – it shouldn't be all one-sided. It's about mutual respect, you know? I think of it like a dance, not a lecture. One time, I was telling a friend from Japan about how we celebrate Thanksgiving in my family – the crazy amount of food, the family drama, the whole shebang! And she told me about their New Year’s celebrations. It was awesome, and I learned so much more than I would have just reading about it online.

The thing is, people have a right to say no. It’s totally cool if they don’t want to share personal stuff. And you know what? That's okay. Pressuring someone isn't gonna get you anywhere, it'll just make them uncomfortable. It's about being mindful, and remembering that their culture isn't some kind of open museum for you to just explore whenever you please. It's their life. Their story. Their experiences. And showing respect for that is, I think, the most important part of cultural awareness. Does that make sense? Hopefully I haven't totally butchered this explanation!
