Gosh, figuring out how much Chinese train travel costs is trickier than you’d think! I mean, it’s not like there’s one single price, right? It really depends. I remember taking a super-fast train from Xi’an to Beijing once – that was expensive, comparatively speaking. Probably closer to that higher end of the scale. They say second-class tickets, on those zippy 200-250 km/h trains, can be as cheap as, like, four and a half cents USD per kilometer. Crazy cheap, huh? But then if you’re on one of those really fast trains, maybe even hitting 350 km/h (I’ve been on those, whizzing past the landscape!), it’ll jump up to about 7.7 cents per kilometer.

And that’s just second class! First class is, well, let’s just say I’ve only ever dreamt of first class. Probably a whole other ball game price-wise.

I read somewhere that trains are usually pretty full, about 70% occupancy on average. Makes sense, considering how affordable they can be sometimes! I remember that trip from Xi’an, though… that train was packed. I barely had room to stretch my legs. But hey, at least I got to see the amazing scenery fly by! It’s just a little frustrating to try and get a concrete number, you know? It’s all ranges and averages. But hey, at least it’s usually much cheaper than flying, that’s for sure!
