What is the purpose of a business recording transactions?

What's the point of all this business record-keeping, you ask? Ugh, bookkeeping, right? It's a total drag, I get it. But seriously, tracking every single transaction – even the tiny ones, like that $2 coffee I totally needed to stay awake during that client call – is absolutely essential.
