Do AAA games actually make money? I mean, seriously, those things cost a fortune to make, right? Like, I remember reading about that one game – what was it… Cyberpunk 2077? They should make a profit, that’s for sure. I mean, they’re designed to. Think about it – triple-A games pull out all the stops. Top-notch graphics, amazing voice acting, hours and hours of gameplay… it’s all incredibly expensive. But that’s the whole point, isn’t it? They’re aiming for a massive audience, millions of people buying the game. That’s how they recoup those huge development and marketing costs. It’s kind of like, if you’re gonna spend a million bucks making a movie, you better be aiming to make ten million, right? Same deal here.
But, and this is a big but, it doesn’t always work out that way. Remember that Cyberpunk game again? It had a rough launch, to say the least. So even with all that investment, if the game’s buggy, or just plain bad, you can kiss your profits goodbye. It’s a risky business, making AAA games. Huge potential for reward, but also a massive potential for… well, for failure. It makes me wonder sometimes, how many games are actually profitable? Probably a lot fewer than you’d think, though the successful ones REALLY rake it in.
