Kan man fjerne en ADHD-diagnose?
Can you actually get rid of an ADHD diagnosis? That's something I've wondered myself, honestly. I mean, you hear about people who, with therapy and medication, seem to completely turn things around. My cousin, for example, he was diagnosed when he was ten – absolute whirlwind of a kid, couldn't sit still for a second. Now? He's got a steady job, a family…he still says he struggles sometimes, but you wouldn't guess he had ADHD based on how well he's doing. So, does that mean the diagnosis just…vanishes?
Nope. At least, that's what my psychiatrist told me, and she's seen a LOT of cases. Apparently, it's not like getting the chicken pox; you don't just "get over it". Medication helps manage the symptoms – the hyperactivity, the impulsivity, the trouble focusing – but it doesn't actually cure ADHD. It's a part of you, they say, like being left-handed or having brown eyes. You can learn to work with it, to manage it much better, but it doesn't just disappear.
Now, if your symptoms improve drastically – like, seriously, night and day – then a psychiatrist might reassess things. But even then? The underlying diagnosis likely sticks around. It's not like they're gonna magically erase it from your medical records! And you absolutely, positively need a referral from your doctor to even get that reassessment. You can't just decide "Oh, I'm cured!" and walk away. That whole process, from what I understand, is pretty formal.
So yeah, a bit of a bummer, right? But it also kinda makes sense. It’s a part of who you are, not some temporary illness. Learning to live with it is the key, I think. And my cousin? He’s proof that a good life is totally possible, even with ADHD.
