What is the most common place to get food poisoning?
Okay, so, where do you think most people get food poisoning? Seriously, think about it. Picnics? Weddings? Nope. It's actually at home! I know, right?! Totally blew my mind when I first heard it. You'd think it'd be those iffy-looking street vendors or something, but no. Home.
I mean, think about it though... does that really surprise you? We get kinda lazy in our own kitchens sometimes, don't we? I know I do. We forget to wash our hands properly, or maybe we leave that chicken out on the counter a little too long while we're catching up on the latest gossip. We think "oh, it'll be fine," but then BAM! Food poisoning.
I remember this one time, my friend Susan made this amazing lasagna for a potluck. It was delicious. Everyone raved about it. But later that night, half the people at the potluck were sick. Turns out, she’d undercooked the meat. Poor Susan! She felt terrible. But it's so easy to do, isn't it? Just a little slip-up, and suddenly you're dealing with a stomach bug.
I saw this thing online somewhere, some statistic – I can’t remember exactly where, maybe the CDC? – and it said something like the vast majority of food poisoning cases actually happen at home. Makes sense, when you really break it down. So yeah, be careful out there… but be even more careful in your own kitchen! You might be surprised at how much risk is lurking right there in your fridge.
