In response to the ongoing financial challenges faced by many Americans, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a one-time supplement payment of $250 for recipients of Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. This payment is intended to provide additional financial assistance to those who are struggling due to the economic impact of the pandemic.

Eligibility

The $250 supplemental payment is available to individuals who receive Social Security or SSI benefits as of December 31, 2022. This includes individuals who receive:

• Social Security retirement benefits
• Social Security disability benefits
• Social Security survivor benefits
• SSI for individuals with disabilities
• SSI for individuals aged 65 or older

Payment Details

The one-time payment will be sent out automatically to eligible recipients. The payment will arrive via mail for those who receive paper checks. For individuals who have signed up for Direct Express debit cards, the payment will be directly deposited into their accounts.

The payment is not subject to taxation and does not affect an individual's eligibility for other government benefits.

Additional Information

The SSA notes that individuals who have recently applied for Social Security or SSI benefits may not receive the supplemental payment immediately. They will receive the payment once their eligibility has been determined.
