Is Vietnam good economically?

Is Vietnam good economically? Honestly, that’s a question I’ve wrestled with myself, especially after spending a couple of months backpacking through the country last year. I mean, you see the bustling cities, the motorbike madness, the incredible food – it feels vibrant, right? But is that just surface level stuff?

Turns out, the economy’s actually doing pretty darn well, even if it’s slowed down a bit. I read somewhere that it grew at 5.05% in 2023 – which, yeah, is a drop from 6% the year before, but still! Compared to other developing countries, that’s seriously impressive. Think about it – I remember talking to a guy running a small cafe in Hoi An, he was complaining about rising prices, but also bragging about how much business he was getting from tourists. It felt like a microcosm of the whole thing – challenges, yes, but also incredible potential.

They say the business environment is pretty good, too. Easier to start a business than in a lot of places, I’ve heard. And long-term? People seem optimistic, you know? Like, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine – there are definitely hurdles. But there’s this feeling of forward momentum – a real energy. It reminded me of… gosh, I don’t know… my friend starting her own online bakery a few years back. It was a struggle at first, tons of late nights, but look at her now! She’s thriving. Vietnam feels a bit like that – a bit scrappy, but full of potential. So yeah, I’d say, economically, Vietnam’s doing alright for itself, even if it’s not perfect. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, that’s for sure.
