What are bartenders called now?

What do we even call bartenders these days? It drives me crazy! This whole "mixologist" versus "bartender" debate, honestly? I'm so over it. You see them tossed around like they're synonyms, especially in those glossy magazine articles, and it just feels wrong, you know? Like, it's a real disservice to the actual people behind the bar.

To me, a bartender is so much more than some fancy drink-mixer. I mean, sure, they make drinks, but they're also the heart of the place, right? They're the ones who remember your usual, the ones who offer a comforting word when you've had a rough day. Remember that time I was going through that breakup with Mark? Old Man Fitzwilliam at O'Malley's – he knew exactly what I needed: a double whiskey and a sympathetic ear. He didn't mix my emotions, he understood them. That's a bartender, not just some... mixologist.

"Mixologist" feels all pretentious, doesn't it? Like something out of a Wes Anderson movie. Maybe it's just me, but it lacks that human touch. It feels less… relatable? It makes it sound like they're just following a recipe, not building a connection. And building connections? That's what makes a great bartender. My friend Sarah, she works at this tiny dive bar, and she knows everyone's name, their kids' names, even their dog's names! She's a bartender, through and through. Not a mixologist. Although, I guess she could probably whip up a mean Aviation cocktail if she wanted to.
