What are the rules for the Shinkansen?

Shinkansen Luggage Regulations

The Shinkansen, Japan's high-speed railway network, offers a convenient and efficient way to travel throughout the country. To ensure a smooth and comfortable journey, it's important to adhere to the established luggage regulations.

Baggage Allowance

Passengers are permitted to bring two free pieces of luggage on board the Shinkansen. These must be within the following dimensions:

• Total combined dimensions (length + width + height): 250 cm or less
• Maximum length: 2 meters
• Weight limit: 30 kg

Additional Luggage

If you have additional luggage beyond the free allowance, you will need to purchase a baggage ticket at the station. Charges may vary depending on the size and weight of your luggage.

Prohibited Items

Certain items are prohibited from being carried on board the Shinkansen, including:

• Dangerous goods (e.g., flammable materials, explosives)
• Large musical instruments (e.g., guitars, drums)
• Bulky or oversized items that cannot fit in the designated luggage spaces
• Live animals (except for service animals)

Tips for Packing

To avoid any inconvenience, it's recommended to pack your luggage efficiently and within the specified dimensions. Consider using suitcases with wheels for easy maneuverability. If you have bulky items, such as skis or snowboards, you may need to make special arrangements with the station staff.

Luggage Storage

If you have excess luggage that cannot be brought on board the Shinkansen, you can use the coin-operated lockers available at most stations. These lockers are generally large enough to accommodate larger suitcases and bags.

By following these luggage regulations, you can ensure a comfortable and hassle-free journey on the Shinkansen.
