Can my 12 year old get a credit card?
Honestly, the idea of my 12-year-old having their own credit card sends shivers down my spine! Theyre simply not mature enough to handle that kind of responsibility. While they cant get one independently, I understand the lure of adding them as an authorized user on my card. Maybe at 13 or 14, Id consider it, but only under very strict conditions and with constant monitoring. It would have to be about teaching them responsible spending, not just letting them loose with plastic!
Twelve years old with a credit card?! Seriously? That just sounds way too young to me. I mean, think about it – at twelve, my kid was still losing their shoes, let alone keeping track of finances! Can you even imagine? They’d probably buy a mountain of Robux or something, and then where would we be? Drowning in virtual debt! Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration, but still… the responsibility is just too much at that age. They’re not ready for it. I’ve heard of people adding their kids as authorized users when they’re a little older, like maybe 13 or 14? I guess I could maybe see that, but only if I had some serious ground rules in place. And believe me, I’d be watching that account like a hawk! It wouldn’t be about giving them free rein, but more about showing them how credit actually works, you know? Like, “Okay, you charged this, now this is how we pay it back and what happens if we don’t.” That kind of thing. It’s a learning process, not a free-for-all. Remember when I got my first credit card and went a little crazy with those platform shoes? Yeah, don’t want a repeat of that debacle! So, short answer? No way, not at twelve. Maybe later, but with a whole lot of caution and oversight.
