What is the average out of pocket for childbirth?

So, what's the average out-of-pocket cost for childbirth? I've been looking into this, and honestly, I'm freaking out a little. I mean, $3,500? Seriously?! That's... terrifying. I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park, financially speaking, but that's a huge chunk of change, even with insurance! Like, even with insurance! My friend Sarah, she had twins – her insurance covered a lot, but still, ended up shelling out close to five grand, and she was practically living on ramen noodles for months afterward. Remember that? It really makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

It's not just the initial cost, either. It's the what ifs. What if there are complications? What if you need a C-section? Those costs can skyrocket, right? And then there's all the little extras – those cute little newborn outfits everyone keeps buying (bless their hearts, but my wallet is crying!), diapers, formula if breastfeeding doesn't work out... It’s endless, isn’t it? It's just overwhelming thinking about it all. I feel like I'm constantly juggling these financial worries.
