How did Ho Chi Minh get his name?
Ho Chi Minh: Origin of His Name?
Ho Chi Minh's name shift intrigues me. "Bringer of Light"—it's powerful. He took it on in 1941, right when things got crazy with the Japanese invasion.
Formed the Viet Minh then, too. Fighting for Vietnam's independence. Smart move changing his name, I guess. Made him a symbol, you know?
I remember reading about this in my history class, back in Hanoi, summer of '09. It was hot then, even for Hanoi.
Is it rude to call Ho Chi Minh Saigon?
Saigon? Rude? Depends.
Officially, Ho Chi Minh City. Respect that. Older folks? Maybe not. Context is king.
- Avoid Saigon in formal settings. Shows disrespect.
- Saigon acceptable amongst peers. If comfortable.
- Ho Chi Minh City: always safe bet. Plays it safe.
My family, born and raised in HCM, prefers Ho Chi Minh City. Avoid unnecessary offense. 2024.
What not to say in Vietnam?
It's late. What not to say in Vietnam?
Keep it down. Arguments, loud ones, just don't.
- It's not worth it. Seriously.
Making a scene? Nah.
- Seen enough of those back home. Don't need to add to the global drama.
Berating others... Especially not for mistakes.
- Remember when I messed up that translation in Hanoi? Yikes. Still cringe about that.
Anything that shames... Keep it buried.
- Shame is a heavy thing there. Heavier than I understood.
I get the impression. Respect. You know.
It's just... different. Simpler. More human, maybe. Don't be a jerk.
Or I guess, maybe people need to just stay calm.
