What was Ho Chi Minhs birth name?

Okay, so, like, Ho Chi Minh? That guy had a bunch of names, which is kinda confusing. His real name, the one he was born with, I think was Nguyen Sinh Cung.

But wait, there's more. I kinda rember reading somewhere (maybe in that dusty history book from like, 10th grade?) that he also went by Nguyen Tat Thanh.

And then there's Nguyen Ai Quoc too, which I'm pretty sure I saw plastered on propaganda posters when I backpacked through Vietnam back in, uh, gosh, must've been Febuary 2015? So cheap back then, I got pho for like, 20,000 dong, felt like a king.

He was born, if I'm getting all this right, May 19th, 1890. Kim Lien Village, Nam Dan District, Nghe An Province. Vietnam. Whew, history!

Do people still call Ho Chi Minh City Saigon?

Saigon... Saigon, whispers on the wind, a ghost of a name. 1975 faded, yet, Saigon lingers, a flavor, a memory. Ho Chi Minh City, the official decree, but the heart... does the heart listen to decrees?

Saigon. Still there, in the markets, bustling, overflowing. It lives on lips, a secret shared, a connection to the past. Diaspora, reaching across oceans, clinging to the name.

  • Saigon's echoes.
  • My grandmother, she always said Saigon.
  • Never Ho Chi Minh City. Never.

Southern Vietnamese cling tightly. Old Saigon, a feeling. A home left behind but never forgotten.

Old maps... I still find old maps. Saigon emblazoned, bold. Ho Chi Minh... a name learned, respected. But Saigon? It's love.

  • A river runs.
  • Through it.
  • Through my veins?
  • The blood of Saigon.

Daily speech, it carries Saigon. A casual name, a habitual thing. Ho Chi Minh City, formal, official. Saigon, real.

Saigon, it is more than a city. It is feeling. And what is feeling if not all that matters?
