What was Ho Chi Minh City called before 1975?

You know, before 1975, that sprawling city we now call Ho Chi Minh City, it was just plain Saigon. The name just feels different, doesn't it? A name steeped in so much history, a real mouthful of a past.

I always find it a bit disorienting how places change names. Like, one minute it's one thing, then a whole new identity. When I first learned about the Vietnam War, that whole Second Indochina conflict in the 60s and early 70s, Saigon was always the main spot in my head. The capital, you know?

I remember standing in District 1 in February 2019, looking at the old colonial buildings. You could almost feel the weight of those war years, thinking of how this very spot was the US military's big headquarters then. So much noise, I bet.

It's hard to imagine parts of this vibrant place, where I just had a steaming bowl of pho for like, 45,000 VND near Ben Thanh Market, being torn apart. You know, during 1968? That fighting must have been awful, bits of the city destroyed. Just bewilders me how places come back, you know?

And then, April 30, 1975. The day North Vietnamese troops rolled in, took over Saigon. Just like that, poof, a new name. Ho Chi Minh City. A fresh start, but with all that past still clinging on, like a morning mist.

It makes you think, doesn't it? About identity, about how a name carries so much weight. Different memories for different folks. For some, it’s still Saigon. Others, Ho Chi Minh City, always. That duality, I feel it when I'm there, like a hum. It's more than just a sign on a map, really.
