The List Was Purely Subjective: Think of it as a really old, really prestigious, massively biased "Best Of" list. Totally arbitrary. Like judging the best pizza place by how many pigeons it attracts.

• They traveled extensively: Imagine backpacking through the ancient world, but with far fewer hostels and way more sand fleas.
