A MiG-29 fighter jet was shot down by rebels in Ukraine's Luhansk Oblast. The pilot successfully ejected and was recovered. Separately, an Su-24M (call sign "White 27") was also downed by rebel forces in the same region, with both crew members successfully ejecting.

I remember that summer vividly, maybe late July 2014. The news, it just felt so heavy then, and hearing about a MiG-29, one of those sleek jets, getting taken out... it stuck with me. They said it was returning from a successful run, and then, bang.

My mind always goes straight to the pilot, you know? The relief I felt when reports came in that they ejected and were found by search and rescue, it was palpable. Such a thin line between life and... well, the other thing.
