Is flying a small plane safer than driving a car?
Okay, so, is flying a little plane really safer than just driving your car? People ask me this all the time!
Honestly? I feel way safer piloting my little Cessna than, like, merging onto the highway during rush hour. I mean, have you seen those highway fatality stats? They're insane! I get that initial flutter of nerves during takeoff, that "oh boy, here we go!" feeling. But, for me at least, it's nothing compared to the constant stress of dodging erratic drivers and weaving through traffic.
I think part of it too is just perception, right? Up there, it's just you, the plane, and the sky. Down here...well, down here it's a metal jungle. Knowing that, statistically, flying actually does have fewer fatalities per mile travelled? That just kind of seals the deal for me. It totally reinforces that "safer in the air" feeling.
Like, a friend of mine, he's a long-haul trucker. He's got stories, wild stories, about near misses and close calls on the road. He swears blind driving is the most dangerous thing anyone can do. Maybe he's biased! But compared to him, I feel like up in my cockpit, I'm in control. Though, a bumpy patch of turbulence can definitely make you rethink things for a second... still, wouldn't trade it.
