What degree to be a rocket scientist?

So, you wanna be a rocket scientist? Wow, that’s awesome! I mean, seriously, who doesn’t dream of blasting off into space, right? But what’s the deal with the schooling? It’s not as simple as just saying “Aerospace Engineering degree!” – though that’s definitely a big one.

My cousin, Mark, he’s a total whiz-bang at this stuff, and he got his aerospace engineering degree, sure. But he also says it’s more about what you do with it. I mean, the degree is the ticket, but it’s not the whole show, know what I mean? He had some crazy internships in college – one was at NASA, seriously – which made a huge difference. You know, networking is a big deal.

But aerospace engineering isn’t the only way. Think about it – rocket science isn’t just about building rockets. You need people who are amazing at maths, I mean really mind-blowingly good at complex equations. Physics is, of course, essential – understanding how things move in space and all that crazy stuff. Computer science too; I heard somewhere that they’re using a ton of AI now in design and trajectory stuff. And other types of engineering – mechanical, electrical – they all play a part.

I remember reading somewhere – I think it was a Popular Science article, or maybe it was a blog…I can’t quite remember now – that there’s actually a HUGE demand for people with these skills. Like, apparently, the space industry is booming right now! It’s not all just NASA either; lots of private companies are getting into the game. So yeah, get that degree, build that awesome skillset, and who knows? Maybe one day you’ll be the one helping launch the next generation of rockets! Just don’t forget the internships, okay?
