How are the Roaring 20s typically depicted or portrayed in media?

Okay, so how do I see the Roaring 20s portrayed? Media, right? Honestly, it's all flappers and jazz!

Think glitz and glam. The Charleston, ya know? It's like everyone was partying nonstop.

Movies and sports blew up HUGE during the 1920s.

I remember watching "The Untouchables" filmed in Chicago. Costumes! Cars! Wow! Al Capone made big $$$, and Prohibition fueled that.

Radio and magazines created celebrity culture. Athletes and actors became idols, larger than life. A simpler time? Maybe. But exciting, too.

What was the stereotypical new woman of the 1920s?

The twenties… God, they feel so far away now. A lifetime ago. Short skirts, bobbed hair. That’s what everyone remembers, right? The flapper.

It wasn’t just the clothes though. It was a feeling, a defiance. A rejection of everything before. My grandmother, bless her soul, she always talked about it. She never actually was one, of course. Too proper for all that, even then. But she saw them.

They smoked. Publicly. Imagine. And drank. They danced. The Charleston. Crazy, wild, thrilling stuff. A rejection. A whole different world than my own sheltered upbringing.

It felt rebellious. Dangerous. Exciting. A complete break from all that came before. My great aunt Lillian… she was different. She did it all. She always told me stories. Those stories always lingered on after she left.

The thing is… It wasn’t all fun and games. There was a darkness, a shadow hanging over it all. Prohibition. The changing social norms created new problems and hidden pressures. The whole image is very idealized.

My family has photos from then. Black and white, faded. The smiles don’t always reach the eyes. They felt a lot of sadness, too. I remember seeing those photos. Seeing her sad smile.
