How rare is it to get hit by a train?

Okay, so, how rare is it to get hit by a train? Ugh, even thinking about it gives me the chills. You know, reading about those stats... it's just awful. Like, nine deaths involving trains in a year? That's nine families completely shattered. And yeah, okay, maybe the numbers are down compared to before, but still...

What really freaks me out is that one-to-seven ratio of deaths to injuries. One in seven! That's not good. Seriously, it makes you feel like just being near a train is playing a really messed up game of chance. Like, statistically you're more likely to get seriously hurt than, you know... but seriously injured is bad enough, right? That's a life changed forever, maybe even ruined. And then you think about the rail workers... they're around those things all day. It's gotta be a constant worry.

I always wonder what could really be done to make things safer. More barriers? Better signage? I don't know, but something has to, right? Because those numbers, no matter how "rare," still represent real people. And that's what gets me.
