Responding to rejection with dignity involves acknowledging your feelings, staying calm, and thanking the person for their honesty. Avoid negative self-talk; rejection doesnt define your worth.

Ugh, rejection. Just the word itself feels like a punch to the gut, doesn’t it? I remember applying for that dream internship – the one I’d practically built my entire summer around – and getting the “no” email. My heart sank. Seriously, I wanted to crawl under the covers and never emerge.

But then, what? You can’t just stay there, wallowing, right? Responding with dignity – that’s the key. It’s about acknowledging the sting, letting yourself feel that disappointment. It’s okay to be bummed, even furious. I definitely cried a little (okay, a lot). Don’t pretend you’re some robot unaffected by it all. That’s just not realistic.

For me, a huge part of it is taking a deep breath and remembering that, hey, it’s not personal. I mean, most of the time, it really isn’t. There were probably a hundred other amazing applicants, maybe someone with more specific skills, better luck, or just a better fit for what they needed at the time. Remembering that helped me avoid the whole “I’m a total failure” spiral I’m prone to.

And then, the thank you. It sounds so small, almost pointless when you’re hurting, but honestly, a simple “Thank you for letting me know” goes a long way. It shows grace, and it’s kind of surprisingly powerful. I did that with the internship, and it actually helped me feel a little more in control of the situation. Less like a victim, you know?

Also, seriously, ditch the negative self-talk. Rejection doesn’t define you. I mean, I know it feels like it does in the moment – trust me, I’ve been there – but it really, truly doesn’t. You are more than just this one application, this one job, this one… whatever it is. Think about all the other things you are good at; all the cool things you’ve done! Remember your wins. You got this!
