What happens if money never existed?
Without money, trade would rely on bartering. This system, exchanging goods/services directly, faces challenges like agreeing on value (how many apples for a shoe?) and finding someone who wants what you have and has what you need. Complex transactions would become incredibly difficult.
Imagine a world without money. Can you even picture it? It’s kind of mind-blowing, right? I mean, everything revolves around it. Without cash, we’d be stuck with bartering. Basically, swapping stuff. Like, “Hey, I’ll give you these five apples… for that shoe?” See the problem? What if the shoemaker doesn’t like apples? Or what if he thinks five apples aren’t worth a whole shoe? It’d be a nightmare trying to agree on the value of things.
My grandma used to tell stories about how, during the war, they sometimes bartered because money wasn’t worth much. She traded a family heirloom, a beautiful silver teapot, for a sack of potatoes! Just imagine the desperation. Makes you realize how essential a stable currency is.
And the logistics? Forget about it! Bartering only works for simple exchanges. Try buying a car with chickens. Seriously, who wants a thousand chickens? Where would you even put them?! And what if you need, I don’t know, a new washing machine? What are you going to offer, a year’s supply of homemade jam? It just wouldn’t work. Complex transactions, like buying a house or paying for college, would be…well, practically impossible. It makes you appreciate the convenience of money, doesn’t it? So much easier than hauling around chickens.
