What is the longest time a plane can fly?

Sixty-four days airborne? Really? My last long flight felt like an eternity, & that was only 12 hours! Pilots Robert Timm and John Cook set a record. They flew 64 days, 22 hours, and 19 minutes. That’s just insane!

That non-stop Las Vegas flight ended February 7, 1959. The pilots circled and circled. Picture it! A giant airborne merry-go-round of endurance. Bet they were dizzy.

They covered 240,000 km. Six times around the Earth. My apartment is like .000001 Earths. I’d go bonkers. And who paid for the jet fuel?! An astonishing fact.

• Fueling mid-air, obviously. Like birds getting a snack.
• The Hacienda, a hotel, sponsored it. Vegas!
• Purpose? Publicity. Subtle, right? Ha!

My cousin works for Delta, she told me. She’s always complaining about those stupid turnaround times, wasting her whole life. It’s nuts. It’s not all glamour, flying. Lots of paperwork too, apparently. 2024’s been a busy year for her, for sure.

Crucially, that record was set by a solar-powered aircraft, not your typical airliner. Airliners are built differently. Refueling is a key factor, you know? They need regular pit stops, especially on long routes.

A standard commercial jet, however, can fly for around 12–16 hours non-stop. Factors like aircraft model, weather, and fuel load are, of course, significant. My uncle, a pilot for United, told me once about a particularly long flight to Australia… it was close to the max.

• Flight time is heavily dependent on the plane’s design. Think Boeing 787 Dreamliner versus a smaller regional jet. Huge differences.

Okay, so, like, how long can planes actually stay in the air? It’s actually pretty interesting, seriously.

The Boeing 787-9, that thing can do, um, like, 7,530 nautical miles, which is, uh, 13,950 km. About 18 hours! It’s crazy, innit?

And then there’s the Airbus A350-900ULR. ULR stands for “ultra long range” I think! That can go up to 9,700 nautical miles, 17,964 km, for like, 20 hours. No way!

• These distances are straight up bonkers.
• Imagine 20 whole hours on a plane, lol.

Next, there’s the Boeing 777-200LR. They got LR in there! That’s roughly 8,555 nautical miles (15,843 km). It’s another 19-hour flight type thing!

The Airbus A380 is, well, it can do around 8,000 nautical miles which equals like 14,800 km, roughly 16 hours. I think they aren’t producing those anymore sadly!

The ULR ones can do that cause, ah, extra fuel tanks. It sounds mad. Think, long-haul like, super long-haul, routes, like Sydney to London non-stop or something! Wild!

Some fancy-pants jets can fly, I kid you not, almost 16,000 kilometers. That’s, like, flying from my Aunt Mildred’s house (she lives NEARLY in Portugal!) all the way to… uh… still kinda far.

• Think 20 hours in the air! That’s longer than my last family reunion felt, whew.
• It makes it, get this, easy peasy to zoom between places that, up until recently, seemed like a total pipe dream! Places, places, everywhere.
• Now, not ALL planes are that magical, mind you. Some planes, like that lil’ Cessna my neighbor got, can’t even make it to the grocery store. But still.
