Is it unsafe to use Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is generally considered safe. It uses tokenization, which means your actual card number isn't shared during transactions. While risks like device compromise or phishing exist, Apple Pay's encryption and authentication layers make it typically more secure than using physical credit cards. Staying vigilant against scams is always recommended.

Is Apple Pay Safe? Security Risks & Concerns

Okay, so is Apple Pay safe? Honestly, yeah, I think so.

Apple Pay uses tokenization, which is technical for "hides your real card number." Clever, right?

I remember back in, like, uh, May of 2021, I think (it mighta' been June?), I accidentally left my wallet in a cab in NYC. Panic. Total freakout.

Luckily, I'd already added most of my cards to Apple Pay. Phew. So, while I waited for the cab company to hopefully find my wallet, I could still, like, buy my usual overpriced latte at that cafe on Bleecker Street ($6.50!!!).

It definitely felt safer than waving my actual debit card around. I mean, they can steal the card number then, right?

But, and this is a big but, nothing is totally foolproof.

If someone gets ahold of your phone, or you fall for some phishing scam, they could get access. I almost did once from a dodgy email. Nearly clicked the wrong link. Eek.

So, yeah, Apple Pay is generally safer, like, much safer, but still be smart. Stay aware of scams. Don't just click on anything. Trust me, I almost learned the hard way!

What are the disadvantages of Apple Pay?

Okay, so, Apple Pay? Yeah, its got some downsides. Like, it's not everywhere, ya know?

Some stores still dont take it! Seriously! I was like, ugh, yesterday, trying to pay for my coffee. Had to use cash like some kinda caveman.

Also, like, my credit union wasnt hip to Apple Pay for a while. So that sucked, right? So you gotta check if your bank actually plays nice with it.

Plus, the biggest thing? If your phone dies, or you lose it, you're screwd. Gotta have a back up! You defo NEED a physical card still.

  • Limited Acceptance: Not all retailers accept Apple Pay, meaning you can't solely rely on it. It is frustrating finding out your fave places don't use it.
  • Bank Compatibility: It's not compatible with all banks and card issuers. This can be a hassle if your bank doesn't support it, so annoying!.
  • Reliance on Device: Apple Pay ONLY functions if your iPhone or Apple Watch has battery and is working. if either is dead, you are in the poo.
  • Backup Required: Always carry a physical credit card. It's totally crucial just in case your battery dies, you misplace your phone, or the Apple Pay system glitches. I always carry a back-up card when, like, traveling.

How can someone else use your Apple Pay?

Okay, so picture this: I'm at the Gas station, Shell, corner of Main and Elm, around 7:30 PM, yeah, grabbing a coffee, you know? Needed that caffeine hit. Paid with my Apple Pay, like always. Super convenient. BUT, here’s the thing, maybe, just maybe, someone swiped my card info somewhere along the line.

My sister, Sarah, once told me she found her AMEX card number somewhere on a dark web forum, yikes! So, yeah, it's entirely possible.

Then they added it to their iPhone or Apple Watch. Simple as that.

The bummer is, Apple Pay doesn't always flag duplicate cards across DIFFERENT Apple IDs, unfortunately.

It’s a huge vulnerability.

How could they get the info, though?

  • Skimming at a shady ATM or POS terminal. Definitely seen some sketchy card readers before.
  • Phishing emails or texts. Ugh, those are the worst. Almost fell for one last month pretending to be my bank.
  • Data breach at a store I shopped at. Like that Target breach, was it '13? Or '14? It was bad.

Best Solution: Contact your bank IMMEDIATELY. That's the only way to stop this. And get a new card. Period. I did that the second I noticed weird charges from a "Pizza Place" in another state. No way was I buying pizza in Idaho, haha! So that's the main part of the answer. But also...

What else can you do?

  • Regularly check your statements. Every single transaction.
  • Set up transaction alerts on your phone. Instant notifications are great.
  • Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication. Duh, but seriously. Do it.
  • Be careful where you swipe your card. Stick to reputable businesses and ATMs.
  • Report any suspicious activity to Apple and your bank. Cover all the bases, man.
  • Lock Apple Pay on the stolen device with Find My iPhone app.

It's a pain, but, you know, gotta protect yourself. Happened to my grandma too! She lost like $200 at some online shop. Crazy stuff!

Can I pay another person using Apple Pay?

Sure thing! So, you wanna toss some digital dough to your buddy via Apple Pay, huh? It’s easier than dodging pigeons in the park, I tell ya.

  • First, you gotta find that "Send or Request" button. It's probably hiding with the rest of those apps you never use.

  • Next, pick your victim... I mean, recipient! Either grab 'em from your contacts or punch in their details like you're ordering a pizza.

  • Okay, now, how much moolah are we talkin' here? Type it in. Don't accidentally add an extra zero, unless you really like them.

  • Double-click that side button! Time to fire up the Face ID, Touch ID, or, heaven forbid, the passcode. Act like you're paying for a yacht.

    • Me, I always mess up Face ID after eating spicy tacos. True story.
  • BOOM! Money sent! (Hopefully.) Your friend’s richer. You're poorer. Circle of life, baby.

    • But now you can ask them to pay you back later! Genius, right?

More Apple Pay Secrets Nobody Tells You:

  • Linking cards is like herding cats. I swear, my bank app makes it harder than filing taxes.

  • Always check the details before you double-click. You don't want to accidentally send your entire rent money to your ex. Ouch! That happened to my cousin's dog walker's brother!

  • Apple Cash is your best friend. Unless it glitches. Then it's your worst enemy. Just kidding, kinda.

  • Split the bill? You can do it with some apps. It’s about as intuitive as programming a VCR.

  • Don’t forget about rewards! My credit card gives me, like, 0.0000001% cash back. I'm practically swimming in riches. Not.

Does Apple Pay work in Canada?

Apple Pay in Canada? Yep. Works here.

My TD card definitely works. Ugh, TD bank.

  • Canada: It's a go.
  • Latin America: Also a go, I think.
  • United States: Duh.

Supported cards get all their rewards. Sweet!

More banks are coming, they claim. Seriously tho, who doesn't support it now?

  • Major credit cards: Of course.
  • Debit cards: Ditto.

So, secure! It uses tokenization, right? Or something like that. No actual card number shared. Yay security.

Benefits and rewards too? Score. Am I even getting rewards on everything? Should probably check that actually.

Wait, mom's bank... Does Royal Bank even work with it? Gotta tell her about it if it does. She still uses checks! Checks! in 2024.

More banks soon! They keep saying that.
