The Pacific Surfliner’s fleet employs Charger locomotives, specifically designed for passenger service and certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as Tier IV emissions compliant. This certification signifies a substantial reduction in pollutants compared to older locomotives, placing them among the cleanest diesel-electric options currently in operation. So why the confusion? The Pacific Surfliner operates on tracks that are also used by Metrolink commuter trains, some of which are fully electric. Seeing different trains on shared tracks can easily lead to misidentification.
