What does LAN allow?

A LAN (Local Area Network) allows devices to:

  • Share a single internet connection
  • Share files and resources
  • Use shared printers
  • Access and control other connected devices

Okay, so what’s the big deal with a LAN, right? I mean, what does it actually do? Well, let me tell you, because back in college, our whole dorm floor relied on one – and boy, did it make a difference!

First off, it lets everyone share that precious, precious internet connection. Remember those days of fighting over bandwidth? Yeah, a LAN helps avoid that nightmare. We were all streaming Netflix simultaneously, and somehow, it worked! Mostly. Okay, sometimes there was buffering, but still, way better than dial-up. I’ll never forget those days.

Then there’s the file sharing thing. So useful! Need to send a huge project file to your friend? No more emailing it back and forth, waiting forever! I remember once I had this massive video file for a class presentation – a whole 5 gigabytes! I just zipped it onto the shared folder on the LAN and my friend downloaded it in minutes. Instant gratification, right?

And printers! Oh my god, shared printers. The bane of my college years was walking all the way across campus to find a working printer. A LAN makes it so you can print from anywhere on the network. It was pure bliss. I actually started to enjoy writing those term papers, knowing I’d only have to walk two steps to the printer in our shared study space.

Lastly, you can kind of control other devices on the network. This is more techy, but it means things like accessing files on someone else’s computer (with their permission, of course! Don’t be a creep!) Or, in my case, remotely controlling my friend’s computer to help him fix his broken games – good times, great memories, lots of troubleshooting.

So yeah, a LAN – it’s basically a game changer, especially if you’re in a situation where you need lots of devices all communicating together. Makes life so much easier, honestly. It makes you think about all the older technology – I mean, remember the floppy disks? Seriously? Now it’s all about fast data transfers, thanks to LAN.
