5G speeds are a wild card. Theoretically, we're talking 10 Gbps – ridiculously fast. That's the marketing spiel, anyway. Reality, however, bites.

My friend, a network engineer, told me last week that real-world 5G download speeds in his area (which, incidentally, is a major metropolitan area in California) vary wildly. Think 1.4 to 14 times faster than 4G. It depends. On what? Everything. Seriously.

Factors influencing this speed discrepancy are numerous:

• Network congestion: Rush hour? Forget it.
• Signal strength: Are you in a concrete jungle? Goodbye, speed.
• Device capability: My own phone, a Galaxy S23 Ultra, handles 5G better than my old iPhone. Go figure.
• Carrier infrastructure: Some providers are simply better than others. Duh.

This variability is the frustrating truth. It's like predicting the weather – lots of potential, but rarely the exact outcome. The promise of 10 Gbps is a distant dream for most users, which, frankly, is disappointing. We've been sold a dream, haven't we? It's a classic example of marketing over-promising. It is what it is. Speeds in 2024 remain inconsistent, sadly.

I remember bragging about it. Being so fast. Now?

• Year: Measured as of November 2024.

Thirty-fourth in the world. Feels wrong, somehow.

We used to be number two. What happened? Everything changes, huh?

• Ranking change: Fell from 2nd in 2019.
• More recently: It dropped to 4th in 2021.

That was the golden age.

Now...34th. Just another number.

Okay, South Korea's internet speed... let me see.

• Around 172.53 Mbps download speed, wow, thats pretty fast.
• Median is 157.63 Mbps. Wonder what my home internet is running at? Gotta check later.

US is close. No wait… hold on…

• US speed, 161.97 Mbps, interesting.

Switzerland? Is that right?

• Switzerland 161.88 Mbps. So close to the US!
• Sweden's around 156.42 Mbps.

My brother said fiber is the best. Is that true? Fiber is kinda pricey though.

South Korea is still number one! Pretty cool, pretty cool. They must have crazy infrastructure.

OMG, South Korea's internet? Crazy fast! Like, seriously. I was there last year, 2023, streaming 4k vids non-stop, no buffering whatsoever! South Korea is amazing for internet. Way better than here in the states. My cousin lives there; she says it's unbelievable. They're always topping the charts. Seriously, 172.53 Mbps download, on average. Insane speed, right? Thats a lot faster than my 50mbps here. And the mobile speed's pretty darn good too – around 141mbps. So yeah, South Korea wins hands down.

Here's the thing: speed's not the only thing. I also found the connectivity everywhere was just awesome. I mean, seriously, everywhere. even on the subway.

I really need to go back. Their internet is, like, a major selling point for me, lol! Maybe I'll go next year. I'm also thinking of learning Korean. It sounds difficult, though. Maybe next year.
