What is Tier 1 and Tier 2 data center?

Okay, so you wanna know about Tier 1 and Tier 2 data centers, huh? Honestly, trying to wrap my head around the differences used to drive me crazy! It’s not always super obvious.

You almost feel like you could sleep soundly knowing your stuff is in their hands.

Now, a Tier 2 data center… it’s a step down. They do have backups, but it’s more like, “Okay, if the main system totally crashes and burns, then we’ll switch over to this other thing we bolted on later.” It’s less… seamless. More like a “hold on tight!” kind of situation. Honestly, it just doesn’t inspire the same level of confidence.

I remember once, a friend of mine had their website hosted at a place that, looking back, I’m pretty sure was a Tier 2. We had a big campaign planned, and BAM! The website went down for like, half a day! Turns out, their primary power system had a hiccup, and while they did have a backup generator, it took a while to get it up and running.
