Why is POS charges so high?

High Point of Sale (POS) charges in Nigeria stem from cash scarcity and increased operational costs for agents. These agents, crucial for financial inclusion, face rising expenses, passing these costs onto consumers through higher transaction fees. The scarcity of physical cash further exacerbates the problem, increasing demand and thus charges.

Ugh, POS charges are killing me these days! Seriously, why are they so high in Nigeria? I remember back when… well, I don’t even remember when they weren’t high, actually. It’s like every time I need to withdraw cash, I’m paying a small fortune.

It’s basically down to two things, as far as I can gather. The first is the crazy cash scarcity. Think about it: when everyone’s desperate for cash, and the POS agents are the only ones who seem to have it, they can basically charge whatever they want, can’t they? It’s simple supply and demand, I guess. Makes sense, but it’s so frustrating.

The other thing is the rising cost of everything for these agents. They have to power their generators (because, Nigeria!), pay for internet data, maybe even security. All of these expenses get passed on to us, the customers. It’s a vicious cycle! I was talking to this POS agent the other day – she was telling me how much diesel now costs. Let me tell you, it’s ridiculous! No wonder they’re charging more. I mean, they have to make a living too, right? But still…

It’s this weird situation where you’re almost thankful these agents exist because they’re bringing financial services to people who wouldn’t otherwise have them. Like, in my village, there isn’t a single bank branch, so the POS agent is a lifesaver. But then, you’re also slightly resentful about having to pay those hefty charges. It’s a complicated feeling. Something has to change though, because this just isn’t sustainable in the long run. Don’t you think?
