Eight hours… before? A lifetime. Can you even breathe that long in airport air? Tick, tock.

Twenty-four hours… a whole day before. Airports are open one day before. But counters… ah, the counters. A mere two hours. Such compressed time near departure. Two hours only.

My worn copy of Leaves of Grass, stained with forgotten tea… I’d read Whitman, waiting, dreaming of flight. Check-in opens two hours pre-flight.

Security… six hours a vigil. A sterile, echoing vigil. I once saw a woman knit a whole scarf in that time. Six hours… before what, exactly?

Ten hours before? Madness. Entering the airport is possible 24 hours before. Can you check in and give up your luggage that early. Can they? Will they? The baggage carousel, a hungry beast, awaits. Is it too early?

• Airport Entry: Usually, the airport doors swing open 24 hours before your flight takes wing. A liminal space.
• Check-in Counter: The check-in counter awakens two hours before your scheduled departure. No sooner, I say.
• Factors: Several things influence this dance.
  • Airlines policies are the music. Policies, oh they dance with dollars.
  • Specific airport. Airports, vast and unknowable.
  • International flight or Domestic? Time zones bend.
  • The airline’s opening times of the counter. Some might not open even 2 hours before.
  • Your ticket. Do you have status?

Eight hours early? Honey, are you trying to move into the airport? Seriously.

Airlines typically open the baggage floodgates 2-4 hours before takeoff. So plan accordingly. No early birds allowed here, unless they’re bringing worms… for me. I like worms.

• Domestic flights: Assume 2-4 hour window.

• International flights? They can be sticklers. Maybe then six hours ahead. Don’t bet your boarding pass on it.

• Check with your airline, obviously. I mean, really. My psychic powers only go so far. (They told me you’d ask.)

Why this baggage ballet? Airports are already a chaotic zoo. Imagine if everyone showed up twelve hours early! Utter pandemonium, darling.

Also, staffing! Airlines aren’t exactly swimming in spare baggage handlers. My brother-in-law tried that, by the way. He now owns a llama farm. True story.

Don’t show up too early! Unless you enjoy airport chairs, bad coffee, and the thrilling suspense of watching people walk by. To each their own, I suppose. More worms for me.
