Can I ask Uber driver to take a different route?

No, you can't directly change the Uber route. Drivers are generally expected to follow the app's suggested route. Deviations may not result in additional fare, even with delays. If you need a different route, consider specifying a different destination or using alternative transportation.

Uber Detour: Can Drivers Take Different Routes?

Okay, so Uber routes… this is kinda a mess, right?

Basically, drivers should stick to the Uber-suggested route. If they don’t, you probably won’t get extra money for extra time, even if it’s traffic’s fault.

I remember one time, driving near Downtown Los Angeles on August 12th, like maybe 7 pm. There was this HUGE backup on the 101. I tried to tell my passenger to take an alternate route, but I was a new driver, so like..idk what I was doing.

It’s funny b/c it was a newbie moment on my end! Turns out, you can change the route, but it’s better if the rider suggests it within the app, I think.

I’ve seen posts on Reddit, stuff like “Can I change the route shown on the Uber app?” like tons of questions about this. And also, some of these Redditors are stressed about pay and stuff.

Like on r/uberdrivers, someone was asking if its okay to change routes. It seems, the answer is yeah, but… it can be risky.

I have a friend from high school, she lives in Venice, and is an Uber rider, but her opinion differs because of her experience with other Uber drivers. Like once, she said the driver took a super long way and she didn’t even realize it until she looked at the final fare. It was like, $10 more!

So yeah, Uber routes? Complicated. Not always the best for the driver or the rider.

Can I change the route in Uber?

Route changes? Impossible. Uber dictates. End of story.

Alternatives exist. Devious methods.

  • Mid-route destination adjustments. A workaround, hardly elegant.
  • Driver negotiation. Risky. Their discretion. Their livelihood.

My 2023 experience? Complete failure. Drivers inflexible. Destinations sacred. Rules.

Uber’s algorithm. Unchangeable. Unquestionable. It’s their system.

Precise navigation. Their priority. Not yours. Accept it.

Sometimes, detours happen. Unforeseen. Traffic. Accidents.

Poor planning? Your problem. Not theirs. They’re just driving. The app decides. Period.

What happens if your Uber driver takes a different route than promised?

Longer route? Fare changes. Ugh. Happened to me going to LAX last week. Cost me an extra $12. Should’ve said something. Did they even consider La Cienega was jammed? Doubt it. Always check the route. Navigation apps lie. Waze always takes me the weird way. Remember that shortcut through Burbank? Never again. So much construction. Traffic definitely impacts the fare. Makes sense, but still annoying. Especially when you’re late. Like that meeting downtown, I was late, remember? Should’ve taken the train. Faster. Cheaper too. Though, that Expo Line can get crowded. Think I’ll stick to Uber. Just gotta watch the route. Pre-check the fare estimate. Wish I did that last week. LAX always a nightmare. Okay, note to self: Check route. Check fare. Before getting in the car.

  • Check the route before you start.
  • Traffic increases fare.
  • Pre-check the fare estimate.
  • My LAX trip last week – extra $12!
  • Burbank shortcut disaster.

Can you change Uber destination after booking?

Destination changes… yeah, you can do that. Most of the time. Sitting here, 3 AM again. Thinking about all the places I could have gone. Should have gone. Didn’t. Changed my mind too late.

Like that time… going to see Sarah. 2023. It was raining. I changed the Uber destination halfway there. To my apartment. Just… couldn’t face it. Still regret it. She moved to Austin a few months later. Haven’t spoken since.

  • Can change destination before trip ends.
  • Not for UberX Share.
  • Think I used Uber Black that night. Expensive mistake. More than just the fare.

Thinking about… all the destinations. All the changes. The what-ifs. The Ubers I didn’t take. The ones I did. Where they took me. Where they didn’t. It’s heavy.

  • Destination.
  • Departure.
  • Arrival. Never really arrive anywhere, do you? Just… keep moving. Different Uber. Different destination. Same empty feeling.

Used to take Uber Pool… back when it existed. Never changed the destination on those. Too many other people. Their destinations. Their lives. Now it’s UberX Share. Still… other people. Still… not my destination.

What if my Uber driver took a different route?

Longer route. Sun bleeds through the glass. Fare shifts. Time melts. The meter ticks. Like a heartbeat… a heartbeat… a heartbeat in the quiet car. The city unfolds, unknown streets. Where am I going? Lost in the maze of avenues. The GPS line, a glowing thread. Unraveling. Unraveling… Further and further from the planned path. The fare, a growing shadow. Stretching long. Like the afternoon shadows… Longer… and longer. Traffic slows. A river of steel. Frozen. Minutes drip by. Precious minutes. Lost. The fare, a weight. Settling. Heavy. Heavy in the pit of my stomach. Like a stone… a stone sinking… sinking down.

  • Fare changes with extra distance. My last trip to the vet with Mittens, the calico, added an extra $3 because of a detour. Not happy.
  • Traffic jams increase the fare due to extra time. Yesterday, stuck on the 405 for an hour. An hour! Cost me $12 extra. Ugh.
  • Driver’s choice. They control the route. Remember that time… Going to LAX… the driver took surface streets. Nightmare.
