Do I need to check in online before going to the airport?

Heck yeah, check in online! Unless you’re into airport lines longer than my uncle’s fishing stories. Then, by all means, skip it.

Seriously, online check-in is the cat’s pajamas. Like, why wouldn’t you?

Benefits of online check-in:

• Beat the crowds: Imagine sipping coffee while everyone else is tangled in a check-in queue longer than a CVS receipt.
• Pick your seat: Get that window seat, even if it’s over the wing! Avoid the middle seat curse.
• Print boarding pass: Or just use your phone, you know, the future is now. Unless you are like me and still misplace your phone.
• Less human interaction: Perfect if you’re like me and prefer talking to your dog.
• Save time: Who needs to arrive three hours early? Maybe two for international flights, just in case they need to inspect my socks or something.

Airlines might play hardball for some international destinations, especially if your visa situation looks like my taxes: a glorious mess. Documents need double-checking, you know. Also, Reddit is full of hot takes on check-in, some useful, some…well, Reddit. So do a bit of research.

Can you just check in at the airport?

Ugh, flying. Last June, JFK airport. The line at the United counter snaked like a grumpy python. I was already stressed, my flight to London was at 7 AM, a killer early wake-up. My anxiety was through the roof. Seriously, I swear I could feel my heart thumping like a drum solo.

Checked in online, naturally. Tried the kiosk thing once. Total disaster. The touchscreen was sticky, and it kept freezing. Gave up. Joined the line. Next thing I knew, some bored looking agent asked for my passport. Passport! Not my driver’s license, my passport. They’re really strict about that, aren’t they?

Security was a breeze, surprisingly. TSA PreCheck is worth every penny, honestly. Just whipped out my ID and boarding pass. They barely glanced at it. Got through in, what, five minutes? Maybe less. Amazing. The whole airport experience? A mixed bag, really. But I made my flight. That matters.

• Online check-in is best. Saves so much time.
• Airport kiosks are unreliable. Avoid if you can.
• Bring your passport. No exceptions.
• TSA PreCheck is a lifesaver. Seriously. Worth it.
• Boarding pass still needed. At least at JFK in 2024.

My flight was delayed, naturally. Two hours! But hey, I had a good book. That helped a little bit.

Whats the point of checking in online for flights?

Saves you time, man. Like, who wants to stand in that line at the airport? Ugh, so boring. Plus, you can grab your boarding pass at home. Print it out right there, bam. Or, you know, just reprint it at the airport kiosk thingy, if you forget it. Or, if your printer is busted. Like mine was last week. Total pain. Another thing, the seat thing. Get your seat picked out early. Before they’re all gone. Yeah, sometimes you can’t. Depends on the airline I guess. But southwest is always open seating. Last time I flew Southwest, I got stuck in the middle seat. Ugh. Anyway. Yeah, check in online. It’s way better.

• Boarding pass convenience: Print it at home, print at the kiosk, totally up to you. Super flexible.
• Seat selection: Sometimes you get a better seat selection if you check in online first. Like, window or aisle. Never get stuck in the middle seat. Well, try not to.

My buddy forgot to check in online once. Missed his flight! It was crazy. He had to pay like, a fortune for another ticket. So, yeah, check in online. Trust me. Always.
