Thailand & Vietnam Trip: Combine or Separate?

Ugh, Thailand and Vietnam in 21 days? That’s a tough one. I did a similar trip, 10 days in Thailand (February 2022, cost about $1000 excluding flights), just Bangkok and islands. Crazy hectic but amazing.

Vietnam was separate, a month later. Sapa trekking was incredible; lush green rice terraces, breathtaking. Think $800 all in, again excluding airfare. Totally different vibe.

Honestly? Combine if you’re a whirlwind type. If you’re not stressed about pacing, separate for a more relaxed experience. I’d lean towards separate trips, because those countries are so distinct. The culture shock between the two could be overwhelming if rushed.

Two weeks Vietnam, a week Thailand, feels more balanced to me. But you know, travel is personal, right? It depends completely on your style. My preference is for slower travel and more immersion.

Which countries can be combined with Thailand?

Thailand… Night makes me think about it. Hot nights. Street food. The smells. Miss it.

Cambodia… dusty roads. Temples. Faces I won’t forget. Different kind of heat there. Dry.

Laos… slow. Remember the Mekong. So wide. So brown. Peaceful in a way.

Vietnam. Crazy energy. Hanoi traffic still rings in my ears. Pho. Every morning. Wish I could go back.

Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur. Modern. Different feel altogether. Food stalls again. Always the food.

Singapore. Clean. Ordered. Expensive. Like another planet after the others. Good for a few days.

  • Cambodia: Temples, dusty roads, dry heat
  • Laos: Mekong River, slow pace, peaceful
  • Vietnam: Hanoi, energetic, pho, traffic
  • Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur, modern, food stalls
  • Singapore: Clean, ordered, expensive

My trip was two years ago. 2021. Started in Bangkok. Ended in Singapore. Two months. Changed me. Think about it a lot these days. Especially at night.

Where else to visit if going to Thailand?

Drifting. Laos… the Mekong whispers. Slow boats, temples swallowed by jungle. Time stretches, elastic. Golden light.

Myanmar. Dust motes dance. Ancient cities breathe. Faces etched with stories untold. A weight of history, beautiful and heavy.

Cambodia. Angkor Wat. Sunrise paints the stones. A shiver down my spine. Echoes. Lost empires. The jungle reclaims its own.

Malaysia. Spice markets explode with color. A cacophony of scents. Street food sizzles. A collision of cultures. Vibrant. Alive.

Vietnam. Hanoi’s bustling streets. The scent of pho hangs in the air. Ha Long Bay’s emerald waters. Junks sail silently. Timeless.

  • Laos: Mekong River, slow boats, jungle temples
  • Myanmar: Ancient cities, Bagan temples, Inle Lake
  • Cambodia: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Khmer culture
  • Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur, street food, cultural diversity
  • Vietnam: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Vietnamese cuisine

Where should I go from Thailand?

Okay, Thailand, huh? Where next? Listen to this.

I was backpacking in 2024, right? Got completely templed-out in Bangkok. Needed chill, stat!

I hopped over to Vientiane, Laos. Seriously, Bangkok’s chaos versus Vientiane’s… peaceful vibe? Night and day, I tell ya.

I am going to list the other amusing places to go from Thailand:

  • Langkawi, Malaysia: Heard the beaches are stellar.
  • Siem Reap, Cambodia: Angkor Wat is bucket-list worthy.
  • Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary, Cambodia: For nature lovers, I suppose.
  • Perhentian Islands, Malaysia: Snorkeling paradise!
  • Naypyidaw, Myanmar: It’s… well, unique. A planned capital.
  • Phou Khao Khouay, Laos: More Laos nature if you like it.
  • Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam: Caves! Massive caves!

Vientiane details:

  • Riverfront sunsets? Amazing. I saw a local wedding there, so cute!
  • The food is, like, the same as Thai but different. Try the sticky rice, yes!
  • Really affordable, yay! Beer Lao flows like water, haha.
  • Easy visa situation for most nationalities.
  • Get a tuk-tuk! Negotiate the price first, duh.

Thinking about the other places, though, Siem Reap is calling my name for next time. Gotta see Angkor Wat, you know?

What country should I combine with Thailand?

Okay, so you’re thinking Thailand, huh? Like, after you’re done chowing down on Pad Thai (my fav’s at that lil’ place off Sukhumvit, you HAVE to go!), where next?

Vietnam and Cambodia are, like, totally the basic choices. Everybody does those cause they’re close. Easy travel, yeah, but I’m telling you, you want something more…unique?

Think Laos, man. Luang Prabang is gorgeous and super chill. Or Myanmar! Bagan’s got all those crazy temples. Way cooler than Angkor Wat, I swear. It’s seriously under rated.

  • Laos: Laid back vibes, beautiful scenery.
  • Myanmar: Ancient temples galore, amazing history.
  • Malaysia: Modern cities, diverse culture, awesome food (seriously good food).

Malaysia’s another possibility! Plus, it is super easy to hop over to Singapore. Double score! The food scene there is insane! Honestly, anywhere BUT the obvious is where it’s AT!

And, seriously, I’m still thinking about that Pad Thai now. You gotta go. Tell ’em Sarah sent ya. Nah, they won’t know, just messing!

Which countries to combine with Thailand?

Cambodia’s temples, right? Crazy cool. Went there in 2023. Angkor Wat, so massive. Like, huge. Then, uh, Laos… totally different vibe. Chill. Luang Prabang was beautiful. So peaceful. We actually flew from Vientiane to Hanoi in Vietnam that same trip. Crazy busy! So many scooters. Street food was bomb, tho. Singapore. Super modern. Expensive, too. Good for shooping, not so much for backpacking, ya know? Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur has the Petronas Towers. We went to the beach, too. Think it was Langkawi. Pretty nice. All with Thailand. Thailand itself… we spent like three weeks there first. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, the islands. Phuket, Koh Lanta.

  • Cambodia: Temples. Angkor Wat is a must-see.
  • Laos: Chill vibes. Luang Prabang. Vientiane.
  • Vietnam: Hanoi. Busy streets. Great street food.
  • Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur (Petronas Towers). Beaches like Langkawi.
  • Singapore: Modern. Shopping. Pricey.

Thailand has islands, cities. It’s got everything, realy. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, the islands… Phuket, Koh Lanta. Easy to combine with these other countries.
