Do people take less time off with unlimited PTO?
Is it just me, or does the whole "unlimited PTO" thing sound too good to be true? I mean, imagine, endless vacation days! But then you start to wonder… do people actually take less time off with unlimited PTO? It’s kind of counterintuitive, right? You’d think it’d be the opposite.
Turns out, it kind of is. I remember reading something about this a while back… I think it was a study, maybe? Something like, a 2018 Namely study – yeah, that’s it! – showed that people with unlimited PTO only took something like 13 days off on average. Meanwhile, the folks with regular, traditional PTO were taking 15 days. Two whole days more! What's up with that? Makes you think, doesn't it? It's almost like having no limits makes you feel weird about taking any time off. Like, how much is too much? It’s a mind game, I tell ya. A friend of mine works at a place with unlimited PTO, and she’s always stressed about taking time off. She feels guilty! It's crazy. So, yeah, unlimited PTO… not always what it’s cracked up to be.
