Do you have to go through security in transit?

Generally, you don't need to reclear security for connecting domestic flights. Exceptions exist at airports with unconnected terminals. For domestic-to-international connections, reclearing security is also uncommon, even with terminal changes.

Do I need security when changing planes during a layover?

Okay, so changing planes...security thing? Ugh, confusing. My flight last June 12th from Detroit to San Francisco, connecting in Denver… no extra security. Smooth as silk.

Domestic flights? Usually, nope. Unless it's some weird airport layout. Think smaller hubs.

International though? That’s a different story. Remember that crazy trip to London on July 28th last year? Had to go through security again. Total pain, especially after already being stressed. Took forever, security lines were nuts.

But my Denver-San Francisco connection? Easy peasy. That's what I'm saying, it really depends.

Generally, though, for domestic-to-international, they're usually pretty good about it. But that London trip? Yeah, security checkpoint, round two.

So no, mostly no extra security for domestic connections. International? Possibly. It depends entirely on the airport.

Do I need to go through passport control on a connecting flight?

Destination dictates.

International to domestic? Customs. Always.

Domestic to international? Passport control lurks. No outbound customs, typically.

  • Exception: Ireland flights. Preclearance exists.

Direct flights avoid the gauntlet.

Always check visa requirements. My trip to France showed me that.

Do you need to check in for transit flights?

Ugh, transit flights. So annoying. Always gotta check in again, right? Even if it's just a layover in Dubai. Seriously, who thought that was a good idea? Online check-in is a lifesaver, though. Did that last time, saved me like, an hour. Time zones, total nightmare. Last year, I missed my connection in Hong Kong because of that. Completely messed up my schedule. Needed a new flight, naturally. Cost me a fortune.

  • Online check-in is best.
  • Always check the time zone. It’s crucial! This isn't optional people.
  • My Hong Kong debacle taught me that lesson the hard way.
  • Counter check-in is a backup, I guess. But avoid it if you can. Lines are insane.
  • 2024 is flying by already... man, need a vacation.

Seriously, time zones. My internal clock is never right after a long flight. Jet lag sucks. Next time, I'm taking melatonin. It's something I should have been doing. I need to remember to be more organized. I'm planning a trip to Tokyo in October. Have to book that now! This is getting stressful. Anyway, yeah, transit flights, double check-in. Remember that, you.
