Internet Access While Traveling: How To Stay Connected?

Okay, lemme tell ya how I stay online when I’m outta town. It’s a juggling act, tbh.

Mobile data’s always the easiest– boom, internet on my phone as long got reception.

But yo, it can be $$$ quick! Espeshully overseas. Last time in Rome (03/2023) with Verizon, almost had a meltdown seein’ data charges.

Portable Wi-Fi hotspots? I’ve tried ’em. A little brick I rented in Tokyo last year (08/2022). Was cool at first, felt techie, but then… dead battery mid-day. Grrr.

Local SIM cards can be a life saver and often cheaper. Though figuring out which one is right a head-scratcher at the airport. It’s worth it usually! Remember payin’ like $30 at Charles De Gaulle Airport (10/2019) for one in France. Saved me a bundle.

Public Wi-Fi? Risky business. I usually only use it to check my email, or read the news.

Offline resources are your friends too. Download maps before you get lost, that kind of thing. Think ahead! I learn this the hard way when I was hiking in the Pyrenees (06/2021). Total lifesaver.

Satellite internet exists, but whoa expensive I never used it myself.
