How do I know the range of my Wi-Fi?
To check your Wi-Fi range:
- Locate the Wi-Fi signal indicator on your phone, tablet, and laptop.
- Walk around your home or office with each device.
- Observe the signal strength (bars) as you move farther from your router.
- Note the distance at which the signal weakens significantly. This approximates your Wi-Fi range.
Ugh, Wi-Fi range, right? It’s such a pain sometimes! How many times have you been this close to the router, yet your video call keeps freezing? Seriously, it’s infuriating. So, how do you actually figure out how far your Wi-Fi reaches?
Okay, so here’s what I do. It’s not rocket science, but it works. First, grab your phone, tablet – whatever you usually use – and look for that little Wi-Fi signal icon. You know, the one with the bars? Mine’s usually up near the battery percentage, sometimes a little annoyingly hidden.
Then, the fun part: a little walkabout! I usually start right next to my router – which, by the way, is tucked away in a ridiculously inconvenient corner of my living room. Seriously, who designs these things? Anyway, I start there, checking the bars. Full strength, of course. Then I stroll around, keeping an eye on those precious bars. They’re my little Wi-Fi lifeblood, you know? I head into the kitchen, maybe the hallway, even out to the back garden (don’t judge, sometimes I need to check emails al fresco).
You’ll start to notice the bars dropping. One… then another… eventually, they might just disappear altogether. That’s your approximate dead zone, or, the edge of your Wi-Fi kingdom. I remember once, trying to work from my shed – which, let me tell you, is way too far – I got like, half a bar, and my zoom call became a slideshow. Awful.
This isn’t a perfect scientific measurement, I’m not gonna lie, it’s more of a “good enough” method. There are apps, I hear, that can give you more precise measurements, but honestly, this works for me. It gives you a pretty good idea of where your signal’s strong and where it’s weak. Then, you can start strategizing – maybe a Wi-Fi extender or a different router placement? Anyway, happy Wi-Fi hunting!
