How do I prepare for going out of the country?

Okay, so you're going out of the country? Exciting! But a little nerve-wracking too, right? I know the feeling. Where are you even going? It matters, you know! Anyway, here's what I've learned over the years – because let me tell you, I've made some mistakes.

First things first, health. Before my trip to Peru, I totally skipped the doctor, thinking, "I'm young, I'm invincible!" Yeah, well, altitude sickness is a thing, let me tell you. Don't be like me. Get a check-up. Seriously. And vaccines! Don't even get me started. Update those bad boys. Also, check for any travel advisories – you don't want to walk into a malaria zone without proper precautions. A little medical kit? Essential. Pack some pain relievers, band-aids, maybe some anti-diarrheal meds…you never know. Remember that time I was in Morocco and… well, nevermind.

Then there's the logistics. Packing! Oh, the joys of packing. Think about the climate. I went to Iceland once in the summer thinking it would be all sunshine and rainbows, packed shorts and t-shirts. Nope. Freezing! Layered clothing is your friend, trust me. And if you have any disability needs, make arrangements in advance. It can be a real hassle trying to figure things out last minute in a foreign country.

Safety, of course! Food safety is a BIG one. Street food? Delicious, usually. But...do your research. Look into what's safe to eat, where to eat it. I remember this time in Mexico, I ate something from a street vendor… let's just say I spent more time in the bathroom than sightseeing that day. Learn from my suffering! Gastrointestinal issues are NOT a fun souvenir.
