How early can you get through security before a flight?

Most airports allow entry well before security opens. TSA checkpoints typically open 2-3 hours prior to the first flight. While you can arrive much earlier, it's generally recommended to arrive 2-3 hours before domestic flights and 3+ hours before international flights to account for potential delays. TSA PreCheck expedites security, but still requires arriving with sufficient time.

How early can I go through airport security before my flight?

Okay, so airport security, right? I was totally stressing about this last month, flying out of LAX on July 12th. My flight was at 2 PM.

I got there around 11 AM, seemed early, but the line was, wow, insane. It took forever. So, too early isn't always better.

TSA usually opens a few hours before the earliest flight. But that's not a hard and fast rule; depends on the airport. My friend almost missed her flight in JFK because the lines were unbelievably long.

Seriously, three hours for international is probably a good idea, especially with baggage check and all that jazz. Avoid stress, it's worth it. Two hours domestic, maybe even less if you're efficient, but check your airport's typical wait times.

I've seen people breeze through PreCheck in under 15 minutes; others with regular security lines wait much longer. So that's a factor, too! It's all a gamble, really.
