If you're already a CFI with 300 hours – which, wow, that's impressive – and you're clocking a solid 50 hours a month, it'll take you two years, easy peasy. Twenty-four months, to be exact. That's assuming everything goes perfectly, which it never does, lol.

My friend Mark, he's a total maniac, he did it faster. Much faster. He was, like, obsessed! He smashed it in under 18 months! Insane. He flew practically every day, I swear! That dude's dedication is unreal.

Hacks? There aren't really hacks, it's all about grinding. Find a good flight school, maybe one near a busy airport, that'll help you get more hours quickly. Network like crazy! Get your CFI rating ASAP; that opens up a ton more opportunities. Seriously, networking is key, I can't stress that enough. Plus, being super reliable and professional, that stuff helps too.

The cost? Dude, it's expensive. Think tens of thousands of dollars, at a minimum, probably more like 50k-70k. That's just a guesstimate tho, depends on your spending habits, obviously. Fuel, maintenance, instruction… it all adds up super fast. You'll need a solid financial plan, a real one. Not just hoping.

Ugh, flight hours.

I remember back in 2018, sweating bullets at Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (DVT), scraping together every possible minute. I was a broke student, dreaming of being a real pilot and escaping the endless desert heat.

I was so anxious, I can't explain it.

Seriously, the fastest way I found was instructing. Yeah, boring maybe, but I actually ended up kinda enjoying it. Teaching newbies how to not crash was actually kinda rewarding, surprisingly. And I got paid! Okay, not much, but every little bit helped. Plus, it forced me to really, REALLY know the stuff.

I flew practically every day. I remember one particularly awful student. I can still hear him messing up stall recovery.

Time-building programs seemed too expensive for me. I mean, I looked into it. They wanted like, what, $10,000 for 100 hours in some rickety Cessna? No thanks.

Non-profits... looked into that too. Tried to volunteer with Angel Flight West. Didn't have enough hours initially! Catch-22.

Banner towing? My instructor told me it was super hard on the plane. And dangerous.

Aerial tours? Did a few with a friend who owned a tiny company near the Grand Canyon. Fun, but seasonal. Not reliable hour-building.

Never touched traffic patrol or survey flying. Never got close.

Multi-engine time? Dreamed about it, but that was way out of reach. A man can dream.

Crop dusting? Are you kidding me? I valued my life. Plus, the paperwork?

Flying clubs? Yes. That's probably another good way. I kinda regretted not joining one. Lower rental rates, supposedly.

Later, I discovered some other, like, slightly less conventional ways to build hours. For example, some charter companies would let you sit right seat even if you didn't have all the hours. You were basically unpaid help. It was worth it. I was in that right seat a lot. Another time, I volunteered to ferry aircraft. That was a scary fun time.
