How much to tip shore excursion guides?

Okay, so you’re wondering how much to tip those awesome guides on your shore excursions? It can be a little confusing, right? I know I’ve been there, standing awkwardly with a handful of cash, wondering if I’m tipping too much or too little. Ugh, the worst!

So, here’s a little guide I’ve kind of cobbled together from my own experiences and what I’ve heard from others. Think of it as a starting point…

• For a half-day tour guide: Figure around $5 per person.
• If you’re out all day with your guide: $10 per person is a good ballpark.
• And don’t forget the bus driver! They deserve some love too. I usually give around $2 per person.

Now, these aren’t hard and fast rules, okay? Like, what if your group is huge? You might want to adjust a little. Or what if the tour was amazing? Like, the guide went above and beyond, knew all sorts of cool facts, and maybe even helped you get an awesome photo with a sloth (true story!). Then, heck yeah, tip them extra! They earned it. On the other hand, if the tour was, well, less than stellar… you can adjust downwards.

I remember one time in Cozumel, our guide was just fantastic. He knew so much about Mayan history, and he was so funny! We totally upped his tip. It felt right, you know? It’s all about using your best judgement and what feels comfortable in your wallet. No one wants to feel stressed about tipping on vacation! Isn’t the whole point to relax?
