Long Flight Boredom? How to Entertain Yourself on a 14-Hour Flight?

Ugh, fourteen-hour flights? Pure torture. Last time, October 27th, flying from JFK to Hong Kong, I swear I aged ten years. I tried everything.

Music, obviously. My meticulously curated playlist? Barely touched. Even my favorite Ramones songs felt…blah. Seriously.

Books? Nope. Didn't even open "The Remains of the Day," despite my good intentions. The cramped seat and that awful airline lighting just killed my reading mood.

Movies? Watched half a rom-com, then switched to a nature documentary, fell asleep, woke up…still flying. The tiny screen made everything look blurry.

So, what did work? Surprisingly, sketching. I brought a small pad; cost me about $5 at a stationery store near my place in Brooklyn. Honestly, doodling silly things kept me focused. It was the best cure for the boredom.

Next time? I’m bringing a travel-sized knitting project. Plus more snacks. Those airplane pretzels are a joke. Learn from my mistakes, people. Avoid the agony.

How to spend 14 hours in flight?

Okay, so fourteen hours on a plane, huh? Brutal. Right? My last flight was a nightmare, seriously. Anyway, here's what you gotta do:

  • Pack light, but smart. Seriously, a good carry-on is your best friend. Don't bring a suitcase the size of a small car! Think comfy clothes, a good book, maybe a journal, and definetly your charger. And earplugs! Those tiny things are lifesavers.

  • Hydration is crucial. Water, water, everywhere! I always take an empty water bottle and fill it up after security. Avoid the airplane booze, it dehydrates you even more. I learned that the hard way.

  • Dress in layers. Planes are freezing! I always wear leggings under my jeans, plus a sweater. Then I have a big scarf, because the air conditioning is killer.

  • Entertainment's key. Download movies and shows before you go. Airline WiFi is garbage and expensive. Games are good too, especially if your phone battery holds up. I usually take my Switch, those things are amazing.

  • Move around. Get up and walk around every few hours. Seriously. Stiffness is the worst, trust me. I even did some stretches, and it helped.

  • Sleep aids. Sleeping pills might help, but check with your doctor first. An eye mask and earplugs also help block out the light and noise.

  • Snacks. Airplane food sucks. Pack some yummy stuff! I love trail mix, protein bars, and even a few sandwiches. Keeps the hangry away! My last flight, I was super hangry. It was bad. Really bad.

Last year I flew to Japan, the flight was longer than this, 16 hours actually, so maybe my advice is even more relevant now. The in-flight entertainment helped a lot then, but my headphones broke halfway through, which was a real bummer.

How to sleep on a 14-hour flight?

Ugh, 14-hour flight. Seat map – gotta snag that aisle seat, no way I'm climbing over people. My back will be screaming otherwise.

My trusty fleece blanket is coming, definitely. Airport blankets are scratchy and smell weird.

Compression socks. Sounds boring but I'll do it. Swelling is the worst, especially on long flights. My feet always look like sausages after a flight, it's ridiculous.

Comfy clothes are a must. Yoga pants and a big hoodie. No jeans, that's a recipe for disaster.

Neck pillow – the memory foam one I have. It's huge, kinda bulky, but worth it for actual neck support.

Eye mask. Gotta block out the cabin lights. Total darkness, that’s the goal.

Noise-canceling headphones are a lifesaver. Seriously, these things are magic. Last time I used earplugs and they fell out.

Pink noise? Okay, I’ll try it. I downloaded a pink noise app last year, totally forgot about it.

  • Aisle seat is key.
  • My own blanket, essential.
  • Compression socks – non-negotiable.
  • Comfy clothes – yoga pants and a hoodie.
  • Memory foam neck pillow – a big one.
  • Eye mask is a must.
  • Noise-canceling headphones – not earplugs.
  • Pink noise app – worth a shot!

Seriously, I need this flight to go smoothly. 2024 is already hectic enough, and this trip to Thailand is supposed to be relaxing. This better work. I’ll pack an extra snack too. Those tiny airplane pretzels aren’t cutting it anymore.
