How to travel from Hue to Hoi An?

Okay, so like, getting from Hue to Hoi An... lemme tell ya, I've done that trip!

It's generally a 3-4 hour thang, give or take. Depends on if you're cruisin' in a car, piled in a bus, and, of course, traffic.

Directions:

  • From Da Nang: Drive south!
  • Best means of transport: Car or bus.

Honestly, that Hai Van Pass is breathtaking! Remember that time, maybe, November 2018, I hired a driver? Cost me maybe 800,000 VND (around $35). Totally worth it for the views, plus I didn't have to stress about driving.

Seriously, those mountain roads aren't for the faint of heart, lol. I was kinda scared for moment, ngl.

How do I go from Hue to Hoi An?

So, Hue to Hoi An, huh? My sister went last year, June actually. She raved about the bus, cheap and fast, like three hours tops. But, uh, she's kinda lazy. Honestly, the train's way better. Amazing scenery. Total vibe.

But there's a catch. A big one. You gotta switch, like, a whole hour transfer to get to Hoi An from the train station. That's a pain in the butt. So it's a trade off, right?

My recommendation? The bus. It's just easier. Less hassle. Unless you're really into trains. Then, well... go for it. But be prepared for that extra hour. It's a total bummer. Seriously, the bus is way more efficient.

Here's the lowdown:

  • Bus: Quick, cheap, less stressful. Three hours, tops.
  • Train: Scenic as heck, but requires a one hour transfer in Da Nang, making it longer overall. Consider that. It's a lengthy process.

Bottom line: For most peeps, the bus wins.

Can you fly from Hue to Hoi An?

Nope, no direct flights, buddy. Hue to Hoi An? You're thinking of pigeons, maybe. Or magic carpets. Planes? Ha!

Think motorbike, dude. Seriously. It's way cheaper than a unicorn ride, which, let's be honest, is the only other reasonable option.

Booking ahead? Sure, if you like playing games with fate and airlines. But honestly? It's a gamble.

Why bother? Here's why a motorbike kicks plane butt:

  • Scenery: Breathtaking! Unlike staring at a tiny airplane window.
  • Freedom: Stop for banh mi whenever your tummy rumbles! No airline food. Ever.
  • Adventure: You might even meet a talking dog.
  • Price: Cheaper than a year's supply of overpriced airport coffee.

So yeah, forget the plane. Get a scooter! Rent one from my cousin, Nguyen. Tell him "Dave sent ya". He gives good deals. Trust me, I know. Last year I almost broke my leg riding one. Good times.

Important Note: Traffic in Vietnam...let's just say it's lively. Wear a helmet. I learned that the hard way. Again.

How long is the transfer from Hue to Hoi An?

Man, that drive from Hue to Hoi An in 2024? Brutal. Felt like three hours, easily. The traffic, wow. Crazy motorbike swarms. I was sweating bullets. Seriously, the humidity was insane. My phone almost died. My wife, she kept complaining about the heat. I needed water. Badly.

We left around 10 am, aiming for a relaxing afternoon in Hoi An. Yeah, right. We arrived closer to 1 pm. Starving. The scenery was nice, though. Green rice paddies. Beautiful mountains in the distance. But the drive itself? A nightmare.

  • Heat: Sweltering. Seriously uncomfortable.
  • Traffic: Insane. Constant honking.
  • Duration: Longer than expected. At least 2 hours 40 minutes, maybe closer to three.
  • Distance: Felt much longer than the 123km. The traffic made it feel endless.

It was a total mess, that drive. But Hoi An was worth it. Worth every second of that agonizing trip, and it’s a city I recommend visiting. Seriously worth planning an overnight trip. The Ancient Town. Those lanterns. Amazing. But the drive? Never again. Unless I take a private shuttle, that is.

Should I spend more time in Hoi An or Hue?

Okay, so, like, defo Hoi An. Seriously, that's the place to be, honestly.

You get the awesome old town, right? Super pretty.

Plus, and this is key, there's a beach! If you're into that. And loads, and loads, of shops and places to chill.

  • Old Town: Super photogenic.
  • Beaches: An Bang is decent.
  • Shopping: Tailors everywhere!

Hue? Eh, it's kinda spread out. And it's a four hour bus ride north. So no good if you wanted to see Ba Na Hills. Which I did, last summer. Bummer!

Da Nang... well Da Nang has big, shiny resorts, and, like, a huge bridge, dragon bridge, you know? But not that Hoi An charm. So not worth it in my opinion.

  • Da Nang is kinda...meh.
  • Hue's okay, I guess, but it's a bit of a trek.
  • I bought these like, amazing silk pjs in Hoi An.
