Paying Grab Drivers in Vietnam: How To?

Okay, so paying Grab drivers in Vietnam? Let me tell you ’bout my struggles and how I manage.

You can use credit cards like Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex. Link ’em straight to your Grab. Easy peasy.

But, I gotta say, sometimes it declines for no good reason. Like, what gives, Bank of America?

GrabPay by Moca is another option. Kinda like their own lil’ e-wallet.

I once tried topping it up with cash at a Circle K near Ben Thanh Market (Ho Chi Minh City) back in June 2022. Cost me a little extra fee, think it was 10,000 VND maybe? I don’t remember exactly but was small.

Linking a local bank account to Moca is supposedly smooth, haven’t tried that myself. Still wary of linking too much stuff, ya know?

Is Grab or Taxi cheaper in Vietnam?

Okay, Grab versus Taxi in Vietnam, huh?

Airport taxi… fixed price scams? 200k vndish to Hanoi. Ugh, plus extra charges? Why is it always extra? Is it even worth it?

  • Fixed price…fixed rip-off.
  • Hotel address…another toll?

Then there’s Grab. Safer, maybe? More predictable pricing? Someone on Reddit said something about foreigners and Grab in Hanoi. I should look that up again.

  • Reddit threads…lost in the sauce!
  • Is it safe? Paranoid much?

How much for 15 rides? Who even takes 15 rides? Unless you’re, like, really exploring, 15 feels excessive. And Gojek? Is that even a thing there? Confusing.

  • 15 rides…tourist trap?
  • Gojek…imported?

More Reddit results? More confusion, probably. Need to just get the app and try it. Stop overthinking this whole ordeal. I booked a trip to Hanoi last week. I am arriving on July 18.

  • Just do it! Nike was right, I guess.
  • Less thinking, more riding.

Grab seems easier, honestly. Avoid the taxi hustle. The airport situation is a pain, no question.

  • Airport nightmare…incoming.
  • Grab…my savior?

What is the cheapest mode of transport in Vietnam?

Okay, buses, huh? Buses are THE cheapest way to roll in Vietnam. Like, cheaper than teaching your pet chicken to give you a piggyback ride.

Buses are the go-to for those of us counting pennies. Think of it as a traveling dorm room. But, you know, with less showering.

It’s also becoming more popular. I tell you, it’s the new black for saving money! Even for broke tourists like my uncle Morty back in 2003… or was it 2004? Nah, 2003. He loved the bus, that cheapskate.

  • Dirt Cheap: Seriously, you won’t believe how little it costs. It’s practically free.
  • Popularity Surge: Everybody’s doing it! From students to backpackers.
  • City Slickers: Especially awesome in big cities like Hanoi.

And seriously, did you know I once saw a guy bring a live goat onto a bus in Ho Chi Minh City? Oh man, the smell, haha! Good times.

Can you pay for Grab with a card?

Can you pay for Grab with a card? Oh honey, please.

Yes, you absolutely can. Assuming you haven’t been living under a rock… or just really, really like digging in your couch for loose change. It is 2024, after all.

To add that magic plastic:

  • Payment Section Access: Hunt down the “Payment” section hiding at the app’s bottom. Think of it as a digital scavenger hunt.

  • Settings Tap: Spot that little “Settings” icon? Give it a tap. It’s like whispering a secret password.

Adding a card is easier than convincing my cat that the vacuum isn’t a monster. Though, admittedly, that’s a pretty low bar.
