Is 500 Mbps overkill for 2 people?

Okay, so, is 500 Mbps internet really overkill for just two people? Honestly, probably. I mean, think about it – what are you actually doing online?

Unless you and your partner are both hardcore gamers who are constantly streaming on Twitch while simultaneously downloading massive files… yeah, 500 Mbps is likely way more than you need. I remember when my roommate and I had a measly 50 Mbps connection, and even with both of us watching Netflix and browsing, it was usually fine!

See, most of us are just browsing the web, sending emails, maybe streaming a movie or two. Standard definition stuff? No problem. Even HD is usually pretty manageable with much less than 500 Mbps. I bet you could comfortably stream a couple of HD movies, and still be able to check your email without any lag. Seriously!

But, but, there’s a “but” here. What about 4K? And what if you’re both super into online gaming? Or maybe you’ve got, like, a million smart home devices sucking up bandwidth? (Smart fridges, smart toasters… the whole shebang!) Then, maybe, just maybe, 500 Mbps starts to make a little more sense.

And I gotta admit, there’s something to be said for future-proofing. I mean, who knows what the future holds, right? Maybe in a few years, everything will be streaming in 8K, and we’ll all be regretting our measly little internet plans. I kinda think of it like buying a slightly bigger hard drive than I need – better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it, you know? My brother always says that. So yeah, while it’s probably overkill now, it might be nice to have that extra headroom. Just something to think about!
