Is 802.11 ac compatible with other standards?

Is 802.11ac compatible with my older stuff? I was wondering this myself, you know, because I didn't want to have to chuck out my perfectly good laptop just because I got a fancy new router. And the answer, thankfully, is yes! Phew. It's backward compatible. Which, honestly, is a relief. Imagine having to replace everything every time Wi-Fi tech moved on? Madness!

So, 802.11ac (they call it Wi-Fi 5 now, did you know that?) mainly uses the 5 GHz band – that's where you get those super-fast speeds. But, and this is the important part, it also supports those older standards like 802.11b/g/n which mostly use 2.4 GHz. Remember those? Like, my old iPod Touch, ancient thing, it still connects to my new router just fine. Slower, of course, but it works! So basically, even if you've got a shiny new 802.11ac router beaming out those 5 GHz signals, your older devices can still hop on the 2.4 GHz network. Pretty neat, huh? So no need to panic, your old gadgets aren't obsolete just yet.
