• Activities: Cruising is huge. Kayaking too, obviously. Swimming. Sunbathing if you’re into that. I prefer a good book.

• Comparison: Quieter. Less developed than Ha Long. That’s the appeal.

• Accessibility: Boats depart from Hai Phong or Cat Ba Island. I took a bus from Hanoi. Never again.

• My trip cost $500 for three days. Worth every penny. Seriously.

The limestone karsts, though… breathtaking in both bays. Both stunning. But Lan Ha felt… more intimate.

• Cat Ba Island access: A definite plus. Provided welcome respite. More exploration options. It’s a nice contrast to the smaller islands in Halong.

The restaurants on Cat Ba… decent food. Nothing fancy. Simple seafood. But the setting… unforgettable. The sunsets over the bay… magical. Spectacular. I wish I could go back.

I preferred Lan Ha. Hands down. I spent the entire week there in 2023.

The caves… different story. Halong Bay had these massive tourist traps. Overpriced, overhyped. Lan Ha Bay? The caves were smaller, yes, but way more… authentic. Felt more intimate, more mysterious.

Here’s what stuck with me:

• Halong Bay: Touristy, crowded, lots of islands, but rocky.
• Lan Ha Bay: Peaceful, fewer tourists, lush green islands, intimate caves.

Honestly, I preferred Lan Ha Bay. Way more my vibe. The water was cleaner, too. I’m pretty sure of that. Halong Bay was just… overwhelming. Too much. But hey, different strokes for different folks, I guess.
